New findings confirm that voluntary, community & social enterprise (VCSE) organisations are critical within County Durham’s safeguarding system.
They provide early help, build trusted relationships, and support those who often don’t engage with statutory services. However, findings also highlight challenges, including limited capacity, barriers in training and communication, and a sense of feeling undervalued.
Earlier this year, Durham Community Action invited VCSE organisations that support children & young people and/or adults with needs and/or at risk to share their feedback and experience.
Through a survey, focus group and interviews, we spoke to a small sample of organisations and groups with their support, reaching all ages and complexities within the community
Despite the challenges highlighted, organisations continue to show resilience and are developing internal policies, training and partnerships to strengthen their work, keeping children, young people and adults safe. Continued collaboration and recognition across the safeguarding system will strengthen this vital work.
Moving forward, Durham Community Action will continue working with Durham Safeguarding Children Partnership (DSCP) and Durham Safeguarding Adults Partnership (DSAP) by providing a voice for the VCSE sector and establishing opportunities for improvements where relevant.
