Community Carbon Assessments

Community carbon assessments measure the total greenhouse gas emissions produced within a specific community, e.g. city or region. They help identify emission sources like transport, energy use, and waste, so residents, organisations and businesses in communities can understand their carbon footprint and develop strategies to reduce emissions and support climate action goals effectively.

Durham Community Action, with Sycamore Net Zero CIC, are working with smaller rural communities across County Durham to identify the challenges they face around energy use and explore the potential for sustainable solutions.

These solutions could include community-owned renewable energy solutions such as solar, wind and mine water.

Teesdale Electric Vehicle project

Funded through the GB Energy grant delivered with the North East & Yorkshire Net Zero Hub, the Rural Design Centre is working with Charge my Street and Durham Community Action to explore bringing community-led EV charging to rural Teesdale.

Feasibility and engagement work has been completed across five remote community buildings in Teesdale and shows that all five sites can accommodate both fast and rapid chargers, a major achievement in areas with significant grid constraints.

These sites are:

This project continues to strengthen community energy across County Durham and helps ensure rural communities aren’t left behind in the transition to lowcarbon transport, enabling practical, accessible charging designed around local needs by placing charge points in community spaces to keep benefits, savings and resilience rooted locally.

If you’re a community building in Teesdale or rural County Durham and want to explore EV charging or community energy opportunities, we’d love to hear from you.
