Family Action, who run The Bridge Young Carers Service and Active Families in County Durham has recently been awarded the County Durham Volunteering Kite Mark.

Family Action is a national charity and has been delivering The Bridge Young Carers Service across the County since 2011. Active Families is a new project, which was launched in September this year, in Bishop Auckland.

Achievement of the County Durham Volunteering Kite Mark demonstrates that Family Action meets standards to overcome barriers to volunteering, and recognises the value of recruiting and retaining volunteers, as set out by Durham Community Action, whose commitment to volunteering is actively underpinned by the County Durham Compact.

The Kite Mark shows an organisation manages a volunteering programme where volunteers receive a high quality, positive volunteering experience.  It will help volunteers to make informed choices when they apply to volunteer, and they can be reassured that Family Action have the correct policies and processes in place to offer a rewarding and positive experience.

Family Action’s volunteers help to support families across County Durham by helping to deliver Active Families sessions and also by providing direct family support to improve wellbeing and outcomes.

Abby Thompson, Volunteer Development Manager said “It was a pleasure to work alongside Family Action County Durham and support them to achieve the County Durham Volunteer Kite Mark.  We were delighted to see evidence of good practice in managing volunteering and encouraging a diverse range of volunteers to get involved in supporting young carers and families through the projects.  The volunteers spoke highly of this support and also the opportunities that Family Action County Durham had provided to enable them to develop in their roles”.

Allison Hicks, Operational Manager for Family Action commented that “Volunteers play such an important role in the delivery of Active Families and The Bridge Young Carers work, this Kite Mark Award validates how much we value their contribution.”
