17th Dec 2019

DCA have been approached by the Durham Summer in the City Festival steering group to ask for your help in planning the future of the festival.

Summer in the City is a month long festival of cultural events held throughout June 2019 and featured theatre, music and art. It was a collaboration between Durham University and Durham County Council alongside local artists, with 2019 being the first year established theatre, music and art events united under the brand of Summer in the City Festival. Partners wanted to join forces and establish one cultural offer for the summer with the aim of developing audiences across the three programmes, and celebrating the incredible range of culture on offer during the summer in Durham.

Over the course of the festival there were approximately 19,000 visitors and participants, and audience feedback was consistently positive with 98% wanting to see the festival in future years. Feedback included:

  • “I liked the variety of events and felt like there was something for everyone. Free events also mean that these are accessible to everyone.”
  • “Some really great artist collaborations suitable for all ages.”
  • “It is great to see a festival that links up exciting cultural events happening both with the university and the local community.”

During Summer in the City Festival there were 7 art exhibitions, 17 workshops, 18 concerts and 30 theatre productions across the city, all detailed on the website

They really want to make Summer in the City Festival in 2020 even better, and it is so important they understand the opinions and views of those who work or live within the city and county, and those who would like to get involved in 2020. It would be greatly appreciated if you could complete the short questionnaire below, and return it to  via email by Monday 6th January.
