Did you know that volunteering is 'Time Well Spent?

A quality volunteer experience is inclusive, flexible, impactful, connected, balanced, enjoyable, voluntary and meaningful.

Time Well Spent is a major new report into the volunteering experience published by NCVO in January 2019. It is the result of a national survey carried out through YouGov's panel (10,000+ respondents).

The survey focuses on volunteering through groups, clubs and organisations and includes data on recent volunteers, but also lapsed volunteers and non-volunteers.

Durham Community Action supports organisations and groups to organise and develop their volunteering opportunities and activities through advice, support and training. Through our volunteer centre service, we can promote volunteering opportunities to potential volunteers using events, groups presentations, individual support and newsletters, and work with individuals to find the right volunteering opportunity for them.

We facilitate a quarterly meeting, County Durham Volunteer Co-ordinators Forum which provides updates on volunteering issues, speakers on relevant topics including DBS, encouraging diversity in volunteer recruitment and overcoming barriers for potential volunteers. There is also information on training, events and the opportunity for peer support with other volunteer involving organisations. DCA also offer training opportunities for volunteer co-ordinators/group organisers which include an “Introduction to Volunteer Management” course and also a new course aimed at introducing volunteers to your organisation, “Developing Your Volunteering Induction Process”.

We also provide access to a range of good practice guides through the forum meetings, training courses and advice to organisations. DCA can support organisations to achieve a quality standard in volunteering, the County Durham Volunteer Kite Mark which demonstrates that an organisation meets standards to overcome barriers to accessing volunteering and has in place good practice which supports the recruitment and retention of volunteers and this is recognised by funders and commissioners.

During Volunteers Week held every year on 1-7 June, DCA also organises additional promotional events and a celebration to recognise volunteers from across County Durham.  We also encourage organisations to use this week to recognise their own volunteers and information and ideas along with some free resources can be downloaded from the Volunteers Week website:
