Did you know that if you are a registered charity, you have a legal requirement to update your details with the Charity Commission or complete your annual return at the end of your financial year?

Many of the groups we work with have been receiving their annual reminder from the Charity Commission that the deadline for submitting their annual returns is looming.

For a lot of groups, especially those who are newly registered, this can seem a daunting task so making a start now to gather all the information you will need will make it easier for you to complete your returns when the time comes.

If you are an unincorporated charity with an annual income of less than £10,000 you may simply need to update your details using the Charity Commission online services. For those that do need to submit an annual return, the Charity Commission have provided a list of the questions that you will need to answer here.

We understand that the end of the financial year can be a busy time for trustees who are preparing accounts and reports for AGM’s alongside the day to day tasks that keep the charity running smoothly but don’t forget, while it’s best practice to update your details as soon as possible, the deadline to submit information is 10 months after the end of your financial year. Missing this deadline will put your entry on the charity register ‘in the red’; these details are public and funders will check your compliance history when assessing your applications.

This year the Charity Commission are also asking all charities to check that their details are up to date before they can upload their annual return. If you are leaving it to the deadline to submit the relevant information to the Commission, be prepared for this…Charity Commission guidance about these changes can be found  here
