A charity based in Tanfield Lea which supports children and young people across Stanley, has recently been awarded the County Durham Volunteering Kite Mark.

The Activity Den was started over 11 years ago and today the charity’s team of 20 volunteers are at the heart of everything they do.

Achievement of the County Durham Volunteering Kite Mark demonstrates that The Activity Den meets standards to overcome barriers to volunteering, and recognises the value of recruiting and retaining volunteers, as set out by Durham Community Action.

The Kite Mark shows an organisation manages a volunteering programme where volunteers receive a high quality, positive volunteering experience.  It will support volunteers to make informed choices when they apply to volunteer.  The Activity Den actively encourages the young people who have benefitted from their programmes to get involved.

The Activity Den’s volunteers aim to improve the lives of children and young people from Stanley and the surrounding areas by offering a wide range of opportunities to people.  The Activity Den is a unique children and young people’s project where everyone is welcomed through the doors.  It is inclusive, democratic and young people led and can be accessed 6 days and evenings every week. This is an innovative project which has attracted national attention.

Abby Thompson, Volunteering Development Manager said” Durham Community Action were delighted to present The Activity Den with the County Durham Volunteer Kite Mark award. Volunteers from The Activity Den played an active role in giving their views as part of the Kite Mark assessment process and commented on the training available and the opportunities for personal development.  They also felt that they were able to contribute and shape the services that were provided.

Philip Marshall, Chair of The Activity Den said: “The Activity Den is absolutely thrilled to achieve the volunteer kitemark as it demonstrates how hard working and committed the volunteers are to improve the lives of children and young people in Tanfield Lea and the wider Stanley area.
