Altogether Greener Category 2014

This category was sponsored by the Banks Group in 2014  In the clip below, Mark Dowdall explains why the company was keen to sponsor the awards.

The Category winner was Mary Robinson.  The runners up were Stephen Garden and Michael Tate. Read about their achievements below:

  Mary Robinson  WINNER

After retiring from a Nursing Career and undergoing heart surgery, Mary decided she needed something to help her occupy her time and help with her recuperation.  She became involved with Trimdon Community Garden. A joy for Mary has been to teach local children about planting and growing, and to encourage them to take home vegetables to cook. Mary has helped create a further two planted areas in her community for the benefit of residents, and is always on the lookout for her next local environmental challenge.

  Stephen Garden RUNNER UP

Stephen’s volunteering follows two themes, one as a local Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator and in this category his work towards environmental improvements and nature conservation. Starting with litter picks, grass cutting and Big Brush activities, Stephen has led improvements to a local pond area. He has maintained and cleaned the ponds, planted trees and removed illegal tipping. Making the whole area blossom with a variety of wildlife, it is now a beautiful place to visit.

  Michael Tate  RUNNER UP

Michael has been a volunteer at the Pioneering Care Partnership for over ten years working as a porter and gardener. His contribution to the upkeep of the PCP Community Garden is immense. He works in all weathers to create a pleasant environment for staff, volunteers and centre visitors, and most recently by growing fruit and vegetables. The community garden is now a haven for birds, hedgehogs, flowers and insects.
